When Soheila Homayed was offered the position of Program Manager for the Rural Immigration Initiative, that moment signified the beginning of a journey rooted in passion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to growing inclusive communities.
A Passion for Inclusion and Immigration
As the daughter of an immigrant, Homayed has always had a deep appreciation for the complexities of migration and integration. Growing up in a household that embraced a culture different from those around her, she developed a unique perspective on identity and belonging. These early experiences ignited a passion for ensuring that newcomers to Canada to survive and thrive in their new environments.
Her work with the Rural Development Network (RDN) has allowed her to channel this passion into meaningful change. The RDN takes a holistic approach to community development, implementing programs and initiatives that support rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Their mission is to help these communities access essential resources, funding, and educational opportunities that foster long-term sustainability and growth.
Addressing the Housing Crisis
One of the RDN’s most impactful contributions is its work in affordable housing development. In collaboration with housing professionals across Canada, the organization published a Step-By-Step Guide to Developing Affordable Housing, a vital resource designed to support the creation of sustainable, cost-effective housing in rural and remote communities.
Beyond affordable housing, RDN also takes direct action to assist those displaced by crises. A prime example is their initiative aimed at placing Ukrainian evacuees in safe, culturally relevant homes. Recognizing that housing is a foundation for stability and well-being, Homayed and her team work tirelessly to ensure that individuals and families find a place to call home.
Advocating for the Unhoused
While working to prevent housing instability, RDN also supports those who are currently unhoused. A groundbreaking initiative, Shelter Pulse, provides an online database of feminist and trauma-informed policies specifically tailored for women’s shelters. This initiative empowers shelters with best practices that prioritize dignity, safety, and empowerment for vulnerable populations.
Additionally, RDN plays a crucial role in distributing federal funds to rural and remote organizations working to combat housing insecurity. By providing financial resources to grassroots initiatives, they ensure that local organizations have the support they need to make a real difference.
Data-Driven Solutions for Lasting Impact
Significant among other aspects of RDN’s work is its dedication to data collection. Homayed believes that without data, there can be no meaningful action. RDN collects data on unhoused populations across Alberta, providing invaluable insights that inform resource allocation, policy development, and program refinement.
With each dataset collected and each initiative launched, Homayed and her team reaffirm their commitment to making Canada’s rural and remote communities more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. Through her leadership at RDN, she is paving the way for a future where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.
Soheila Homayed’s story shows the power of dedication, data-driven solutions, and a genuine belief in the strength of inclusive communities. As she continues her work, one thing is certain: the communities she serves will be all the better for it.
