Five thousand onlookers watched in awe as AJ Kule Kambere, known professionally as AJ Megaman, moved across the stage at the Vancouver Battlezone 2023. His dance movements were so precise and fluid that they seemed almost artificial, reminiscent of something generated by AI. Seeing this reaction was profoundly satisfying for AJ. It meant that he had achieved exactly what he intended. He genuinely impressed and captivated his audience.

AJ Megaman’s dancing journey began in 2006, influenced deeply by his math tutor, who was also a professional dancer. Inspired by his mentor, AJ quickly discovered a passion and talent for dance, rapidly growing in skill and presence. Over the last twelve years, AJ has become more than just a performer; he has dedicated himself to teaching dance, with a specific focus on empowering young people.

Empowering Through Movement

AJ’s teaching philosophy is rooted in empowerment and leadership development. Through dance, he mentors young people, helping them build confidence, develop leadership skills, and become influential figures within their communities. AJ sees dance as a powerful tool for personal growth and community building.

His teaching initiative, Reality Check, embodies this vision, nurturing young dancers and developing future leaders. Through Reality Check, AJ has witnessed countless youths transform, gaining confidence and a sense of purpose. The community AJ has built is one of mutual support, encouragement, and continuous growth.

The Birth of Battlezone

AJ launched Battlezone in 2010, initially to raise funds for a school cafeteria in Uganda. He intended it as a single fundraising event, aiming to collect just $2000. But after the tremendous success of the first event, AJ recognised the potential to do even more good.

Driven by community support, Battlezone continued, eventually becoming an annual staple. Through dance competitions and performances, it has raised significant funds for various humanitarian projects, including Hurricane relief and support for underprivileged communities.

AJ reflects on the origins of Battlezone, saying,

“It started simply as a way to raise funds for a cafeteria, but the community turned it into something much bigger.”

The lasting impact of Battlezone reflects AJ’s unwavering commitment to using his art to make tangible, positive changes in the world.

Recognition and Future Aspirations

AJ’s contributions to the dance and wider communities have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he was recognised as one of the “Most Influential Black People in British Columbia,” an honour highlighting his extensive impact beyond the realm of dance. Additionally, AJ appreciates the recognition and support from the BIPOC Foundation, especially through their entrepreneurial programs and annual Excellence Awards Gala.

He firmly believes in the importance of initiatives like those offered by the BIPOC Foundation, which amplify and celebrate BIPOC achievements. AJ actively encourages others in the BIPOC community to utilise these valuable resources, emphasising that collective growth and empowerment can be fostered through shared knowledge and support.

He plans to continue inspiring and nurturing the next generation of dancers and community leaders. His mission remains clear: to empower youth, celebrate culture, and use dance as a platform for meaningful change. Through every step and movement, AJ Megaman continues to impress, express, and heal.
