Renae Barlow is a force of entrepreneurial progress, deeply committed to fostering innovation and economic development in Lethbridge, Alberta. As Vice-President of Entrepreneurship & Innovation with Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL), she plays a pivotal role in driving initiatives that empower businesses and strengthen the local economy. Her leadership is guided by one fundamental belief: the power of collaboration to transform ideas into thriving enterprises.
A City Built on Collaboration
Barlow often cites the ‘collaborative spirit of Lethbridge’ as one of the city’s greatest assets. This spirit has enabled EDL to forge crucial partnerships across Southern Alberta, ensuring that new and emerging businesses receive the tailored support they need.
EDL played an instrumental role in launching the Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta (RINSA). Over a decade (2011–2021), RINSA, alongside Tecconnect, significantly boosted the regional GDP. For every dollar invested, there was a return of $3.09 in GDP impact. Additionally, RINSA supported an average of 22 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs per one million dollars invested, with each FTE contributing approximately $138,400 to the regional GDP.
Tecconnect: A Hub for Innovation
One of the most impactful projects spearheaded by EDL is Tecconnect, a technology innovation incubator for entrepreneurs, innovators, and startups. Since its establishment 12 years ago, Tecconnect has become a central hub for fostering economic growth through emerging technologies and business advisor mentorship. The initiative has provided vital support to entrepreneurs, offering a space where ideas can evolve into successful enterprises.
Barlow played a key role in ensuring Tecconnect became a home for the BIPOC Foundation, recognising the need to support Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour in economic empowerment and cultural inclusion. She worked closely with the Foundation’s leadership, including Executive Director Clement Esene and Co-Founder Sinmi Esene, to ensure their needs were met, even down to small but significant gestures, like offering a helping hand with a stroller as they built their vision.
A Personal Mission to Empower
Barlow’s passion for entrepreneurship is deeply personal. As the former owner of three businesses, she understands firsthand the challenges and triumphs of building something from the ground up. Her experiences as a single mother navigating financial struggles ignited a commitment to reducing economic barriers for others. She has dedicated herself to poverty reduction initiatives, volunteering to support vulnerable populations and creating programs where gaps existed.
From co-founding Entrepreneurs with Disabilities to reading for the blind, Barlow’s work is driven by a profound sense of purpose, elevating those around her and creating opportunities where none previously existed. Her leadership isn’t just about economic metrics; it’s about people, resilience, and a collective vision for progress.
The Future of Lethbridge’s Economy
Barlow envisions Lethbridge as more than just an afterthought to Alberta’s larger cities. She is now steering EDL towards expanding into creative industries, recognising their potential to diversify and strengthen the local economy.
“Why Lethbridge?” Barlow asks.
“Because we can make things happen.”
Under her leadership, those words ring true. With a foundation of innovation, collaboration, and an unyielding commitment to inclusivity, Renae Barlow is shaping Lethbridge into a city where entrepreneurship flourishes and communities thrive.
