My journey with BIPOC Foundation as a newcomer began with a desire to engage more deeply with the community and gain hands-on experience that would contribute to both my personal and professional development. What began as an internship in Administrative Assistance soon evolved into a staff position in Administrative and Human Resources Assistance. From day one, I was ready to make an impact and learn from a team dedicated to uplifting BIPOC voices.

As a first-timer, I was welcomed into an organization that not only lived by the Foundation’s mission but also fostered personal growth and encouraged innovation in everyone involved. Special shout-out to the brilliant and dedicated staff members and volunteers who made it all happen! During my time at BIPOC, I had the chance to work on a variety of meaningful projects. One of my key responsibilities was the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new interns and volunteers while managing their profiles along the way.

This role allowed me to connect with passionate minds and witness firsthand how their contributions made the organization stronger. I also supported the Foundation’s growth and daily operations, gaining invaluable insight into what it takes to run a non-profit effectively. These tasks challenged me to think strategically, prioritize wisely, and communicate clearly, all while keeping our core mission at heart.

Beyond the day-to-day responsibilities, I was fortunate to be part of several key events hosted by the Foundation such as LethsViben’Chill, Black History Month Showcase, Leths Make it happen-Soccer Tournament and Info-seminar. These events were highlights of my time with BIPOC, teaching me the power of collaboration and community. Organizing and executing these events helped me develop skills in event planning, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. The organization was a space that encouraged creativity and critical thinking, giving everyone a chance to learn through hands-on experiences and even make mistakes….trust me, I made a few and grew from them!

What truly stood out to me was how much my time at BIPOC shaped my career. The experience I gained in HR became a solid foundation for my current role. Networking with a diverse group of students and professionals also opened doors to new opportunities which inspired me to think about my career more broadly and innovatively. A special thanks to Ibifuro for her amazing insights on CPHR! I valued the opportunity to learn from a talented and diverse team. Every individual brought a unique perspective, and I gained so much from their insights and guidance.

So, where am I now? I’m thrilled to share that I’m working as a Human Resources Assistant at a manufacturing company located in Western Canada, and I’m a proud member of the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources (CPHR) community in Alberta. My time at BIPOC played a pivotal role in getting me here. Every project, event, and conversation contributed to my success, and for that, I’m deeply grateful. I look forward to continuing my professional journey, always carrying with me the learnings, lessons and memories from my time at BIPOC Foundation.

  • Amara S. Ndianefo – Building Systems, Finding Purpose

My journey volunteering with the BIPOC Foundation over the past few months has been nothing short of fantastic. Coming from a tech background, I initially approached this role with a mindset grounded in systems, processes, and project management, but what I  discovered was so much more profound.

As the Projects Lead, I have had the incredible opportunity to build strong structures for managing multiple impactful initiatives, collaborating with a truly passionate and talented group of people. My team and colleagues have been a constant source of inspiration and support, making every challenge feel like a shared mission.

Working alongside community members, artists, and business leaders from marginalized backgrounds has expanded my perspective in ways I never expected. Despite differences in background and experience, I have found many similarities in our shared drive to create meaningful impact. The skills I brought from the tech world- organization, problem-solving, and strategic planning- have been invaluable in shaping projects that support growth, creativity, and community empowerment.

This experience has deepened my understanding of the challenges marginalized communities face and reinforced my commitment to using my expertise to contribute to positive change. I am proud to be part of a foundation that uplifts voices, fosters collaboration, and makes a real difference in people’s lives.

Volunteering with BIPOC has been a rewarding journey of learning, growth, and impact, one that continues to inspire me every day. I want to especially acknowledge Abdulaziz Sani, our volunteer manager, a visionary leader whose dedication, guidance, and empathy have created an empowering environment for volunteers and community members alike.

Thanks to the BIPOC Foundation for the opportunity to be part of something great, and thanks to the Management team for the continuous drive to create success and push the voices of the marginalized communities.

  • Obue Faith – A Transformative Experience

As a volunteer intern at BIPOC Foundation in the HR and Admin department, I’ve had the privilege of working in an environment that truly prioritizes community empowerment and inclusion. My role has given me hands-on experience in supporting various HR processes, from assisting in recruitment and managing administrative tasks to maintaining organized personnel records. Collaborating with the HR team has allowed me to strengthen my skills in communication, organization, and multitasking, all while contributing to the smooth operation of the foundation.

In addition to my daily responsibilities, I had the opportunity to attend and support events organized by the foundation. These events allowed me to witness the impact of our work firsthand and engage with the communities we serve. Being part of these moments further solidified my passion for contributing to meaningful social causes.

One of the highlights of my internship has been working alongside a team that is passionate about making a positive impact. • Quin Jonas Jenkins – Finding Purpose Through Volunteering

Initially, my motivation for volunteering at the Foundation was as simple as wanting to be part of something that created a positive impact in the world. Following my interview with Aziz, I had another motivation; someone who saw my potential despite my circumstances.

I began my journey with the Foundation by volunteering at the Legacy Gala. I was out of my depth and leapt in headfirst. Even as a new face to the Foundation, my work was recognized, and my efforts were appreciated. That was what solidified my motivation to volunteer with the Foundation, and my appreciation and respect for the individuals within it.

  • Ujunwa Ezeachikulo (Peppy) – A Journey of Growth and Learning

Volunteering with the BIPOC Foundation has been nothing short of transformative. When I initially joined as a Project & Event Assistant, I was eager to contribute to an organization that strives to uplift underrepresented communities. Little did I know that I was about to embark on a personal and professional journey that would shape me in ways I never imagined.

My time at the BIPOC Foundation has been filled with learning experiences, new challenges, and significant growth. From the very beginning, I was entrusted with responsibilities that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Coordinating various projects and assisting in the planning and execution of events required me to refine my organizational and communication skills. Each new task presented opportunities to learn, and with every successful event, I gained more confidence in my abilities.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role has been witnessing the tangible impact our work has on the community. Whether it was organizing workshops, supporting initiatives, or simply ensuring that events ran smoothly, I found a sense of purpose in every project. Seeing people connect, share ideas, and leave with smiles made all the hard work worthwhile.

Beyond the professional skills I’ve developed, the BIPOC Foundation has also been a place where I’ve built meaningful relationships. I have had the pleasure of meeting some truly wonderful individuals like fellow volunteers, project leaders, and community members who have inspired me with their dedication and passion. I’ve made friendships that I will cherish for a lifetime and expanded my network by connecting with like-minded people who share the same commitment to community development and empowerment.

These interactions have not only enriched my experience but have also given me insights into different perspectives, cultures, and ways of thinking. Every conversation has been a learning moment, adding depth to my understanding of the diverse communities we serve. The connections I’ve built here are more than just professional; they are friendships that have broadened my worldview and helped me grow as an individual.

Working with the BIPOC Foundation has taught me the value of teamwork and collaboration. I’ve learned how to adapt to changing circumstances, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and lead with empathy and purpose. I now feel more equipped to handle high-pressure situations and am confident in my ability to contribute effectively in various environments. This experience has not only enhanced my resume but has also groomed me for future job opportunities. I now approach each new challenge with a mindset focused on solutions and a willingness to embrace continuous learning.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of giving back and being part of something larger than oneself. My time at the BIPOC Foundation has shown me that small efforts when combined, can make a big difference. It has fueled my passion for community service and has strengthened my resolve to be an agent of positive change wherever I go.

As we prepare to launch our magazine, I can’t help but reflect on how far I’ve come since I started. I am proud of the person I am becoming and the skills I have acquired along the way. This journey has not just been about volunteering; it’s been about growth, friendship, and discovering my true potential. I am grateful for every experience and look forward to continuing my journey, armed with the knowledge, connections, and inspiration I have gained at the BIPOC Foundation.
