Charles Shima is the force behind Tourifique, a platform set to revolutionise travel utilising an AI concierge, Mia. Tourifique began as ZaNiheza, which served as a gateway to the heart of Africa. Shima envisions a world wherein tourists engage with African culture at its source by interacting with local African people. Eating their food, hearing their stories, and learning their history. Now, as technology evolves, so does he.
The Road That Led Here
Shima was born to Shikama Emmanuel, an accountant. For a brief time, he enjoyed a life of relative privilege. Life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was pleasant. His kindergarten class was a vibrant multicultural environment that caused a young love and respect for other cultures to blossom in his heart. Since his parents were originally from Rwanda, they eventually decided to return home.
In 1994, civil war became a genocide, and Shima found himself fleeing his home. He and his brother made it safely to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but they were in an unfamiliar place. One day, a group of travellers passed by speaking English. At that moment, Shima made a decision; he would learn English. He did not know it then, but that choice would open doors for him in ways he never imagined.
“I have always been a dreamer. I dream, and I challenge myself, and I work hard for it.”
Building a New Path
Shima’s journey eventually brought him to Canada, where he started over once again. After some time, he wanted to visit Rwanda but found that the travel services available to him were severely lacking.
As someone who knew the region, he did not just want a safari. He wanted to immerse himself entirely in the culture that shaped him. Part of this was to attend local events and experience Rwanda as it truly is. But there was simply no way to do that, so he built one.
Thus, ZaNiheza was born as an intimate avenue for you to experience Africa. As time passed and technology advanced, Shima saw an opportunity to take his vision even further.
Making Afrocentric Tourism Mainstream
“Do you know Bob Marley? He succeeded in making reggae mainstream. I’m making Afrocentric tourism mainstream, using technology.”
Tourifique is now in the early stages of developing its AI and app interface. What started as a platform focused on Africa has grown into something bigger. Shima wants to revolutionise travel internationally, giving people the chance to see the world through the eyes of those who call it home.
Looking Ahead
Shima’s story is a testament to resilience, vision, and the power of embracing change. Behind every entrepreneur is a network of mentors, family, and friends whose support makes it all possible.
For Shima, that foundation has helped him turn dreams into reality. Now, he is building something that will allow travellers everywhere to do the same.
